scarily, it's been over a year since my last Shadow! Hope people enjoy this one:
The Commedia dell'Arden is a strolling comedy company that has a semi-permanent home on the edge of the Golden Circle. The actors are all shadow copies of the royal house of Amber - and completely unaware that they are part of a comedy troupe. They all have huge amounts of Bad Stuff - enough that they are too unlucky to die - and are obsessed with their political games and infighting.
The troupe finds a suitable copy of Castle Amber, moves in, and then proceeds to make each other miserable with incompetent schemes and plots. They ignore 'lesser' individuals, and quite happily scheme during court sessions, while walking the streets, or by declaiming their plans from the battlements.
The members are exaggerated and mocking versions of the original Amberites - Caine is a depressed and lonely individual who constantly fakes his death in a plea for attention; Benedict will be introduced as the greatest warrior ever, only to pratfall or be defeated by plants; Flora is constantly arranging parties that no one attends; and so on and so forth.
As the 'Amberites' are always in the open, the audience can simply sit back and watch a truly insane performance. The cast have positive Endurances, so can survive being trampled by herds of pigs, getting their feet caught in cart wheels, or being dragged face down with a foot caught in the stirrup of a galloping horse. Toilet humour is common, especially when Dworkin is on stage.
The Commedia dell'Arden seems to know when a rebellion or attack on Amber is in the offing, and will move to be convenient for the rebels/attackers. Dalt in particular will always know where the troupe currently is. The performances both educate the armies on the personalities of their enemies, and improve morale.
Who owns the Commedia dell'Arden seems to vary; Dalt will imply that he created it, but it predates him (and many of the elder Amberites). The most likely inspiration for its creation is one of Oberon's abandoned wives, but only the GM knows for sure.
