There were times that called for the use of ancient and powerful words, the acknowledgment of humans in a crisis everywhere and everywhen since language was first invented. This was one of them. "Shit." Aurora said.

Part of a series to get people posting....my take:

MAGDALEN

Magdalen (pronounced as the college) is a tidally locked world, one half frozen, the other burnt by constant sunlight. It is always sunset and raining in the thin ribbon of inhabitable land; blizzards sweep out of the ice to mix with blasts of steam from the deserts to create the endless downpour. Sheet lightning sweeps the skies, but rarely reaches the ground.

The water has carved countless gullies, crisscrossing the ribbon of inhabitable land with rivers, leaving numerous islands. The 'trees' provide cover, seeking to protect the soil at the roots from erosion: additionally they are warm, as they shed head from the ground into the air. Finally, the bark appears to be cork, but has the consistency of a warm fluffy towel. Finding a tree with a nook you can nestle in takes time, but can always be done.
