There were times that called for the use of ancient and powerful words, the acknowledgment of humans in a crisis everywhere and everywhen since language was first invented. This was one of them. "Shit." Aurora said.

In browsing through the internet looking for backgrounds for trumps, I've found certain places that suggest to me parts of Amber.
I thought it would be handy to have a place for us to put these ideas.

For Castle Amber I really like Edinburgh Castle. I like how it sits imposing on it's big rock. If only it had a mountain behind it.

For the port area of Amber I really like the classic city of Acco ( or Acre)
It's kept most of it's flavor and the port walls look great. I wish the port was a little larger, but I think it fits pretty well.

For Arden I like the huge trees of Sequoia National Park.

I like Fanad Head for the lighthouse of Cabra. There are several gorgeous images here

Depending on my mood, I like Pigeon River Falls in Minneosta for Jones Falls in Arden. I have some other images of taller falls, but I don't remember where they are to be found.

The Enchanted Garden is a real place, and while there's no place in canon that it fits, I like to use it in Amber someplace.

I will also shamelessly use Sherwood for detail shots in Arden.

I've pulled from a lot of different sources for Amber, but my model for the interior (and to a certain extent the exterior, even though it's not on a mountain) of the castle is Alnwick:

I think of Castle Amber as being piled on and on and on in different styles over the years, and Alnwick, even more than Edinburgh or Warwick, is my my model for that.

I have recently been in Lucerne, Switzerland. It has several buildings etc from the Middle Ages. I want that Chapel Bridge (Kapellbr├╝cke) for Amber!

When it comes to Amber, I almost always think of it in terms of Neuschwanstein Castle, because it's essentially a high fantasy castle, on the side of a mountain.

Image

It works even better, because the view from the castle is basically on a small village below, on the edge of some water, and surrounded by forest.

Image

Granted, the water is a river instead of the sea, and the mountain the castle sits on is somewhat smaller than Kolvir, but depending on the angle a given picture is taken from, that can be somewhat mediated. Or, given someone with enough skill, a larger mountain could potentially be photoshopped into the background.

I recently decided that the casually mentioned "well at Mirata" Brand apparently drew in one of his paintings (the one Corwin references when suggesting Brand has a "distinctive style") looks suspiciously like the chalice well at Glastonbury.

I also realized just how under-utilized that particular location seems to be in Amber RP. In a game community that has a reputation for mining every last nugget (no matter how small or obscure) out of the original text, Amber-related searches for Mirata tend to turn up almost nothing.

Also, I've always liked the Giant's Causeway as a potential setting location, though it doesn't necessarily mesh with anything in the actual books.

Re: Mirata
In RZ's Dilvish stories there was a Keep of Mirata, presumably the stronghold of Dilvish's elvish lover Fevera Mirata, a mistress of illusion.
