There were times that called for the use of ancient and powerful words, the acknowledgment of humans in a crisis everywhere and everywhen since language was first invented. This was one of them. "Shit." Aurora said.

What's the optimal number of PC's for an Amber game? Four seems like too few to have good intrigue potential, eight seems like it would tax my ability to keep up with the individual PCs, if they decided to part ways.

Any thoughts?

I try not to have more than six or seven myself. But that's the operative word - myself. The optimum number is whatever you and your players can manage and still have fun.

I've run Amber for 1 before.

There are a couple of factors to consider. Are you asking for a campaign? Is it face to face or play by email? Or is it for a convention? I'm guessing this is for a campaign, but in any case, Stormraven is right, you have to get to that number yourself. My suggestion; start with a number you think is manageable, then adjust if you need to.

face to face, 4 to 8, with 6 being the optimal number. anything beyond that is difficult to organize or run. this is more about how to run a game, than what game you run.

on the interwebs however, you want twice that because some of them will drop out, and some of them will be slow posters.

One thing to consider about Amber is that it's possible for players to be playing while you are working with other players, so the total number could be larger than in a traditional RPG. It's not like everyone has to sit around a table and wait for their turn.
